Highway 103 crash renews calls for twinning

An accident on Highway 103 near Mahone Bay looked a lot worse than it could have been.

Even so, the crash Sunday night has given more fuel to a former politician looking to have the Fisherman’s Memorial Highway twinned from Halifax to Yarmouth.

Bruce Hetherington lost his son in a crash six years ago on Highway 103. He said there have been more than 70 deaths on the highway in the last decade, and many other people’s lives were changed.

“People that have been injured, [police] say ‘non-life-threatening,’ which is probably true in a lot of cases. But they’re paraplegics, they’re quadriplegics, they’ve lost limbs,” he said, “and there’s hundreds and hundreds of those people.”

The former Halifax councillor says the twinning between exits five and six has started, but more needs to be done.

“It’s coming, but it’s coming very slowly. And how many more residents … have to die before it’s actually finished?” he said.

Hetherington said twinning the highway would even help reduce the damage done by drunk drivers, since fewer head-on collisions would occur.
