Zebra stripe crosswalks approved by HRM council

HRM will change the way it marks crosswalks.

Regional council approved a plan at their meeting yesterday to re-paint city crosswalks with the stripes in an effort to improve safety.

Councillor Gloria McCluskey told Global News that while she supports the change, it will not completely eliminate car-pedestrian accidents.

“We either have to educate them more, or we have to get out there and pick them up.  More people are going to be killed, more people are going to be struck,” said McCluskey.

Zebra striping comes with an initial price tag of $155,000 and will cost the city $85,000 a year in annual maintenance.
