Boyd remembered as passionate and talented in hockey

The communities of Bedford, Bathurst and the hockey community at large are still in shock over the sudden death of a young, up-and-coming Q-league hockey player.

16-year-old Bedford native Jordan Boyd played minor hockey for the Bedford Blues before going to Rothesay Netherwood School, a prep school in New Brunswick.

“I’ve only known his reputation in our association as a player who has come through our system at a very young age,” said Chris Bewsher, president of the Bedford Minor Hockey Association, to Global News. “For many years now, he’s had a reputation for a love of the game. He was a true talent, which was very evident in him and those who watched him play. This is very difficult for many of our coaches who knew him as a player and watched him grow up.”

Paul MacIsaac, a former president of Boyd’s hockey club in Halifax, says it’s sad this would happen to such a young player.

“It’s unbelievable that a person like that, young, strong and healthy, on his way to chase a dream, is now gone. My condolences to his parents.”

Condolences were also delivered on Twitter by QMJHL teams and others with the hashtag #JB17. Tampa Bay Lightning prospect and former Halifax Moosehead Jonathan Drouin tweeted, “Thoughts and prayers to Jordan Boyd family and friends, just awful news…#RestInPeace”

Boyd’s girlfriend, Caitie McCabe, tweeted, “Amazing how fast your whole life can change. Miss you and Love you Jordan. You will never be forgotten. #JB17”

Boyd was a prospect for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan and died after collapsing on the ice during a drill yesterday.

A medical team tried to revive him several times, but he was taken to hospital and pronounced dead. The Titan say an autopsy has been ordered. Boyd was the team’s fourth draft pick, and was selected 66th overall in the QMJHL draft.

A Facebook page has been created in Boyd’s memory, and within 15 hours gathered more than 24,000 likes.
