Be a Santa to a senior

While children are often the focus of christmas charity, at least one program is encouraging residents of Halifax Regional Municipality to remember area seniors.

Many elderly people are along for the holidays, with all their loved ones gone, or find themselves on a tight budget.

In an effort to fill what they saw as a need “Be a Santa to a Senior” was created back in 2006 by Home Instead Senior Care.

Christmas trees are set up at the Berkeley seniors residences and Wal-Mart locations in the Halifax area adorned with ornaments that are labeled with the name of a senior in need. Linked to each ornament is a gift request.

Those who want to play the role of Santa can choose an ornament off the tree, purchase the requested gifts, and drop them back off (unwrapped) at the participating location.

Krista Beelor, director of business development for Home Instead Senior Care says last year over 2,000 seniors received gifts through the program.

The elder population has contributed greatly to the community throughout the years, so Beelor said as rewarding as it is to put a smile on a child’s face this time of year, we should try to do the same for the older demographic in need.

“The seniors are just as worthy of feeling that value, and that love and care during the holidays,” said Beelor.

The “Be a Santa to a Senior” program wraps up Dec. 9.
