VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The push is on to get more schools retro-fitted ahead of the next earthquake.
More than 140 schools in BC need seismic upgrades and the Education Ministry admits it’s a slow process.
Patti Bacchus with the Vancouver School Board says there are dozens of schools in the city that would likely crumble in a quake because of what they were built with.
“They used to wooden and then they moved to reinforced masonry not realizing at the time — and many schools in Vancouver are over 100 years old — that that’s not going to perform well in an earthquake,” she explains.
The cost of making the schools earthquake-proof would top $1 billion.
