Ottawa designer shines in Hollywood

An Ottawa designer’s work is shining up the 84th Academy Awards.

Every year select designers and companies get the chance to mingle with the stars and give away free swag in special gifting suites and this year Orleans-based Karen McClintock scored a spot in the GBK suite in Hollywood’s W Hotel.

McClintock’s glittering jewelry, which features crystals, silver coins, pearls and semi-precious stones has been attracting attention from stars like Anna Lynne McCord, Teri Polo and Melissa McCarthy.

“I’m absolutely thrilled and you know what? Honestly, I’m honoured,” said McClintock in an interview from Los Angeles. “When you have people who can have anything they want to wear and they choose my work, there isn’t a better compliment you can have.”

McClintock designed special pieces for the Oscars, and some of her work will make it down the red carpet. Misty Kingma, a TV and web entertainment host has vowed to wear a glittery necklace to the award show.

McCord, from the show 90210, told McClintock she would wear her necklace to the upcoming Teen Choice Awards.

“This is really a chance to see what the celebrities feel about the jewelry and what people feel outside Canada,” said McClintock. “I can’t tell you the positive responses we’ve had. Somebody wants to try and get us into Neiman Marcus here.

It’s not the first time an Ottawa company has been at the Oscars, in 2009 We-Vibe, which creates rechargeable sex toys also gave away free merchandise.

McClintock’s jewelry can be found at Holt Renfrew and Shepherd’s among other stores.
