One man dead after three pedestrians hit by cars

It was a dangerous Saturday evening for pedestrians on the roads.

One man was killed and two other men suffered non-life-threatening injuries after they were struck by cars in three separate incidents.

Staff Sergeant Lindsay Hernden tells News 95.7 that at 7:25pm a 60-year-old man was hit by a car while crossing Pleasant Street near Atlantic Street in Dartmouth.

He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Hernden says the man was not in a crosswalk when he was struck.

“The driver of the vehicle who struck him was not injured and no charges have been laid at this point,” he explains.

At 6:20pm a 34-year-old man was struck by a vehicle while he was running across the street at Herring Cove Road at Dentith Road and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Again, Hernden says there were no charges.

The third incident happened at 7:27pm when a 54-year-old man suffered non-life threatening injuries when he was hit in a crosswalk while crossing Highfield Park Drive.

In this case, the driver of the vehicle was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Hernden says the incidents are an example of why drivers need to be attentive.

“Particularly on evenings such as last night (Saturday), when we had weather conditions that weren’t exactly ideal,” he explains. “Dim to dark conditions, light rain and wet road conditions.”

He says that can cause problems with visibility.
