Project underway to preserve unmarked graves at cemetery on Halifax military base

A project is underway to preserve hundreds of unmarked graves at a historic cemetery on a Halifax military base.

There are 84 grave markers remaining at the Royal Navy burying ground at Canadian Forces Base Halifax, commonly known as Stadacona.

But historian Rick Sanderson says it’s estimated there were nearly 500 men, women and children interred there, mostly in the 1800’s.

Many were seamen in the Royal Navy, others were family members or civilians who had a connection to the navy.

The federal government is looking to hire experts to use non-invasive methods of determining how many bodies are buried at the site and where.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Sanderson says because of poor records, it may never be known to whom the graves belong.

He says there are no plans to exhume any bodies, out of respect.
