Some people hoping gas masks will protect from radiation

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – In addition to emergency kits and candles, one military supply store in Vancouver has noticed a few folks coming in for gas masks in fear of radiation from Japan.

Our provincial medical health officer has repeatedly said that there are no health risks to British Columbians due to radiation from the Japanese nuclear power plants. But Mark with Gorilla Surplus says some people are still afraid.

He says they regularly stock the masks anyway, but people need to know that “they don’t protect against radiation. Basically, they protect against inhaling harmful [things] like certain harmful chemicals.”

He adds they have also received inquiries over iodine tablets. Health Experts have stated there is no need to take them and they could cause health problems for some people.
