No evacuations of Canadians out of Japan planned

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Prime Minister Stephen Harper says there are no plans to evacuate Canadians out of Japan.

Other countries such as China have been doing evacuations since Japan was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami last week. Other countries like Finland are considering the move.

But Harper, who is in Surrey, says consular staff are focusing on helping Canadians get in touch with loved ones.

“There continues to be large-scale, normal airline service from Japan, so if people want to leave they have that option,” he explains.

Harper also says there is no threat of radiation from nuclear plants making its way to Canada.

“I’ve been in very regular contact with various government agencies responsible for monitoring this and there is no evidence of a scenario that presents any risk to this country,” he stresses.
