People fly home to BC from Japan

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – YVR’s International Arrivals area was especially busy this afternoon as people welcomed loved ones home from disaster-stricken Japan.

“I thought it was going to be the last day of my life,” says Kory as she met her family.  She says she was in Tokyo when the 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit, but she could still feel the effects of the shaker 300 miles away in Sendai.

She adds that while she’s happy to be home, her heart is still in Japan.  “I left my family.  My parents live in Japan.  We’re hoping things will settle down as soon as possible.”

Several people report short supplies of food and water as people stock up.  As they return home to another spot in the Ring of Fire, they’re now much aware of what will happen when the big one hits Vancouver.

“It might be hard to stay calm at a time like that,” says John.  “But that was the biggest lesson that I learned; watching people deal with it in a very logical and rational fashion.”
