Local students en-route to Japan are safe

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A group of students from North Vancouver’s Argyle Secondary School is safe after they flew into Japan yesterday.

Victoria Miles with the school district says the plane was forced to land elsewhere when they couldn’t touch down in Tokyo because of the huge quake.

“Their flight was re-routed yesterday to Sapporo,” she tells us. “All the students are safe. They have been in touch with their families and the school. They’re currently looking at whether or not to return home.”

There are 22 students and three staffers in the group.

“It’s a digital media group with the school,” explains Miles. “It’s a specialty academy at the school and their purpose was to visit Tokyo and to learn more about digital media from the experts in Japan.”

She says they will decide later today if the group is going to come home.
