The Supreme Court of Canada has agreed to hear a dispute between HRM and the federal government over taxes for Citadel Hill.
The two sides are at odds over the assessed value of the land, which the city says should be around $19 million dollars – but Ottawa puts closer to $1.5 million.
The feds say the property can’t be developed, so it has only nominal value. The city says the land has value as a national historic site.
The assessment value determines how much Ottawa pays the city in annual grants, paid in lieu of property taxes.
HRM spokeswoman Shaune MacKinlay tells the Herald the city believes it’s owed more than $12 million, dating back to the 1990s.
No hearing has been set for the date yet.
