Canada Games over for N.S. men’s hockey team

Nova Scotia’s men’s hockey team is officially out of the medal hunt at the Canada Games.

The squad dropped a tough 5-3 quarter-final loss to Ontario in front of about 6000 fans at the Metro Centre Wednesday night.

The hometown crowd cheered loudly and said the Bluenosers put on a great show, despite having a much smaller talent pool to draw from than other provinces.

“From the kids they get to pick from, compared to Ontario, the age group they have to choose from and the demographics, I think they’re doing good,” said one man.

Another woman said the Nova Scotia squad should be proud that they left it all on the ice.

“I think they’ve done pretty good,” she said. “They seem to be a good team, they know what they’re doing and they’re playing well, which is all you can ask for.”

In other competition Wednesday, Nova Scotia’s women’s curling rink edged B.C. 5-4 to move to the crossover semifinals. The women’s squash squad will play for fifth place today, while the men’s squad plays for seventh place.

The Nova Scotia ringette team was eliminated in Wednesday’s quarterfinal against Quebec.
