Halifax vying to host 2014 Indigenous Games

The 2014 Indigenous Games could be coming to Halifax.

Regina, Saskatchewan and London, Ontario are also in running to host the games.

The sport and cultural event is held once every three years and in Canada once every six.

Mayor Peter Kelly tells the Rick Howe Show a stadium isn’t a must to attract the games but it would help.

“If we can aim for that goal and to achieve that new facility not only this but also the World 2015 Women’s FIFA but also other opportunities as well,” he said. “It just opens that door so much more wider.”

He says recent experience with the Canada Games will help the city to wow organizers.

“They’re still going through their due diligence and I’m sure that there will be some follow-up to make sure we are able to host the event,” he said. “We know that we are more than apt to do so because we have all the expertise of the past.”

Organizers will choose a site over the next couple of months.
