Away we go! Dartmouth school wins top prize in Nova Scotia cheer contest

Excitement will be at an all-time high today for the hundreds of Nova Scotia athletes competing in the Canada Games – and students at a Dartmouth elementary school also have something to be excited about.

Crichton Park Elementary took home top prize for the Team Nova Scotia cheer contest put on by Our Children magazine.

Principal Cheryl Highmore tells News 95.7 every student at the school took part in cooking up the winning chant, showcased in a minute long music video.

“We decided to have our full school participate,” she said. “We had all of our students colour their own Nova Scotia flag and one of our teachers remembered a cheer from her sports days.”

Highmore says the Canada Games have a special significance for the kids – not only because they’re being held in Halifax, but because two former Crichton Park students are competing. She says winning the cheer contest was a big thrill.

“We brought them into the school gym on Monday morning, showed them the final version of the cheer, which they hadn’t seen at that point,” she said. “After we let them watch it, we then announced that they had won.”

The winning cheer will be performed at tonight’s opening ceremonies. If you’re not there, you can see it on the school’s website
