Storm of approval for new Rainmen coach

A former NBA player, scout and coach is the new head coach of the Halifax Rainmen and those in the know say the team will benefit with Mike Evans at the helm.

Evans last coached with the Toronto Raptors back when Sam Mitchell was still in charge.

Current Raptors head coach Jay Triano worked alongside Evans during that time. He says Halifax is getting a quality coach and a quality person.

“His work ethic was very good as far as his ability to break down other teams and his ability to work with guards and their play,” he said. “I’d say those were probably the two things that were his special points of emphasis when he was here.”

The voice of the Toronto Raptors and sportsnet.ca columnist Paul Jones says Evans’ hiring is a big step forward for the Rainmen franchise.

“I think you’re going to get a guy that tries to push the ball and take advantage of opportunity breaks and get easy baskets,” he said. “He’s always said when you try to grind it out in the half-court and you let a team get set they lock-in defensively, they know where the help is coming from.”

Evans takes over a team with a 4-2 record following the departure of previous coach Les Berry on Monday.
