Delta park to get a trim in the wake of fatal attack

DELTA (NEWS1130) – Following Saturday’s attack that led to the death of 15-year-old Laura Szendrei, parks and green spaces in Delta will be getting a trim to improve safety in the area.

The decision has already been made to clear the overgrown bushes and low branches in Mackie Park, where the teen was brutally beaten.

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson says it’ll happen as soon as police finish their investigation. “They are still there. They will probably be on site in the wooded area till Friday.”

Meantime, the mayor has asked city staff to look at other green spaces across Delta, especially areas near schools, where children might gather. The city will talk with the school board about doing similar clearing work on its own properties.

But one local teen says even more needs to be done. Sean Hurtig’s sister was friends with Laura. “You could cut down every bush in Delta and you wouldn’t solve the problem of the crime.”

He’s putting up an online petition urging Delta City council to look at adding better lighting to some park paths, or even installing an emergency phone that someone in trouble could access.
