New protections coming for Georges Bank: premier

Nova Scotia’s premier says he will introduce new legislation this fall to increase environmental protection for Georges Bank.

A moratorium on drilling and gas exploration has been in place since 1988 and was extended in May.

Dexter says he would be looking for a “substantial increase in the protections” and is continuing to gather scientific data on the issue.

He wouldn’t provide details, other than to say the new legislation could make the moratorium permanent, which will mean not having to renew the drilling ban every few years.

“It will reduce the level of conflict that seems to come up with this periodically,” he said. “So that’s our intention, is to make sure we protect what has been a historic resource for this province.”

Dexter says that although he can’t control American decisions regarding George’s Bank, he hopes U.S. officials will see the wisdom in acting to preserve the rich fishing grounds, considered one of the most ecologically sensitive areas off the East Coast.
