Early decision coming on George’s Bank

The province will decide whether to review a moratorium on oil and gas exploration on George’s Bank, sooner than expected.

Premier Darrell Dexter says his government will tip its hand within 10 days — well before a June 1st deadline.

“I think the oil spill in the gulf actually raises a lot of awareness for people, with respect to offshore drilling,” Dexter said.

The rich fishing grounds have been protected from exploration by oil and gas companies since 1988.  The current moratorium will expire in 2012, unless the government decides to renew it.

George’s Bank is located between Maine and Nova Scotia.  The U.S. has extended a moratorium on its side of the fishing grounds until 2017.
