Fallen Yarmouth soldier to return home

The town of Yarmouth is preparing to welcome back one of its own, and it’s not the triumphant homecoming many had hoped for.

Sergeant Kirk Taylor was killed in Afghanistan a week-and-a-half ago today his body will be returned to his hometown.

The improvised explosive device that took the lives of Sgt. Taylor, his three comrades and Canadian journalist Michelle Lang did more than just destroy the vehicle the five were in.

That IED also blew apart the hopes and dreams of Taylor’s family

Navy spokesman Mike Bonin says the family is left not just with the grief, but also more practical matters.

“Do you want a military funeral, or do you want a civilian funeral?” said Bonin. “Later on down the road there are decisions as far as pension benefits, and survivor benefits, and supplementary death benefits.”

Bonin says when a soldier dies the Canadian military does a great deal to assist the family, providing them with an army chaplain and a military liaison officer to help them during the difficult time.
