Huskies knock Mooseheads out of playoffs with 5-2 win

ROUYN-NORANDA, QC. – The Halifax Mooseheads’ playoff run has officially come to an end following a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in game six of their opening round playoff series.

The Huskies taking the series four games to two.

But it was a strong showing for a young Halifax team, loaded with 16 and 17-year-old’s and first year players – including Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Jared McIsaac and Nico Hischier – he’s expected to go in the top two at this summer’s NHL entry draft.

The Mooseheads took the Huskies to a pair of overtime games in the series as well, signifying how tight most of the games were between the 15th place Herd and 2nd-ranked Huskies.

The Mooseheads got off to bad start in game six, giving up three unanswered goals by the midway point of the second period, allowing the Huskies to take a 3-0 lead.

Frederic Aube and Jordan Lepage eventually responded, but a Mathieu Boucher goal gave the Huskies a little bit of insurance, bring their lead to 4-2.

Jean-Christophe Beaudin’s power play goal would be the final nail in the coffin, as the Huskies topped Halifax 5-2.

Even with the loss, young Mooseheads goalie Alex Gravel proved his worth. The Mooseheads were heavily outshot over the course of the series, but Gravel still posted a sizzling .924 save percentage.

With the season now over, Halifax will prepare for Thursday’s QMJHL draft lottery. The Mooseheads will be in a draw with the other four bottom teams in the league for a chance to be awarded the first overall pick in the summer’s draft.

The Herd picked first and second overall in the draft last season, choosing Groulx and McIsaac respectively.
