Screaming Eagles win Hurley Cup, defeat Mooseheads 5-2

HALIFAX – The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles won the inaugural Hurley Cup, defeating the Halifax Mooseheads 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Scotiabank Centre.

The first period saw the Screaming Eagles outscoring the Mooseheads 2-1, as Drake Batherson and Vasily Glotov netted a pair of goals for Cape Breton, with Halifax’s Raphaël Lavoie scoring the Herd’s lone goal in the period.

Bradley Kennedy scored on a power play to tie things up for the Herd, but Phélix Martineau scored later in the second period to help the Eagles regain a 3-2 lead.

A pair of goals by Yannik Bertrand and Giovanni Fiore helped secure a 5-2 victory for the Eagles, who walked away with the first ever Hurley Cup.

On Tuesday, the Herd heads to Moncton to take on the Wildcats at the Moncton Coliseum.
