Keep your heart safe while shovelling out this Valentine’s Day

By Mark Hodgins

HALIFAX – Many people in Halifax have spent a lot of time shovelling after yesterday’s blizzard–but all of that digging can put your heart at risk.

Dr. John Gillis told NEWS 95.7 the chance of having a heart problem while clearing snow is very real, and older people are especially at risk.

“If you’re perhaps a little older or worried about your conditioning, and then while shovelling you have symptoms such as shortness of breath or any discomfort–at a minimum–slow down,” said Gillis. “If you have any chest pain at all, stop right away and get some medical attention.”

Gillis said it’s a particular concern when you go from zero activity to intense activity. He suggested you warm up, slow down and take your time.

“The real key is to go slow and warm up in a sense. It’s like playing hockey… you don’t want to go full force. You want to ease into it a bit and see how you feel.”

As well, Gillis said it isn’t only older people who are at risk of having heart, or other health problems, while doing excessive exercise.

“People in their 50’s and 60’s may think they have no issue–until they do. It’s the sort of thing you want to be careful with.”

It’s recommended you don’t try to get all the shovelling done in one go, especially with a dumping like we received yesterday. Another reason to go slow and warm up is the risk of hurting your back and other muscles. Gillis said using the proper techniques can make a big difference.

And of course–it never hurts to be a good neighbour, so it you’re able, lend someone in need a hand.
