Most lobster fishermen in Nova Scotia’s Inverness County are expected to stay off the water Saturday, as a glut of lobster in the market is keeping buyers from purchasing their catches.

Leonard LeBlanc, president of the Gulf Nova Scotia Fishermen’s Coalition, says buyers in his area of Cape Breton say they are inundated with lobster at the processing sector. LeBlanc says he’s been told fishermen in Antigonish are going fishing.

It’s been a challenging season for fishermen who tied up their boats for a time in an effort to win a higher price from buyers. LeBlanc says the Inverness County fishermen have been getting about $3.75 a pound for the catches, adding that’s low given they are seeing increased costs for fuel and bait.

He expects fishermen will likely return to the water Monday, and he fears prices could drop next week.
