Atlantic Canadians first in Canada to bet on Oscars

An anti-gambling advocate is calling for the lottery industry to be curtailed as the Atlantic Lottery Corporation allows customers to bet on the Oscars.

Atlantic Canadians will be the first in Canada to legally bet on who will win best picture, best director and the best actor honours at the 2012 Academy Awards being held Feb. 24. The new game is likened to Pro-Line sports betting.

“A thing like this, sure it’s fun, but it’s a drag on the disposible income of every family that’s involved,” Terry Fulmer told the Rick Howe Show Tuesday.

Game Over VLTs is warning people against the corporation’s latest revenue stream, calling for stricter advertising regulations to curtail the gambling industry.

“Why are they allowed to advertise incessantly on the television…and spend our money to tell us how wonderful they are? None of the other addictive economies are allowed to advertise like that,” Fulmer told the talk show.

He takes offence to the ALC promoting itself as part of the entertainment industry.

“That’s the con,” said Fulmer. “We all know you don’t believe a prostitute when she tells you she loves you, and you shouldn’t believe the gambling industry when they tell you it’s only entertainment.”
