Musical based on documentary ‘Hands on a Hardbody’ hopes for an upcoming Broadway spot

NEW YORK, N.Y. – A musical based on the documentary “Hands on a Hardbody” will be groping its way to Broadway.

Producers said Tuesday the show, with a book by Doug Wright and songs by Trey Anastasio and Amanda Green, will try to make it to New York during the 2012-2013 season following a tune-up this spring at the La Jolla Playhouse.

The musical is based on the 1997 documentary of the same name about a truck giveaway contest in which participants try to keep their hand on the vehicle the longest.

Wright won the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for “I Am My Own Wife” in 2004. Anastasio is a founding member of the band Phish. Green co-wrote the lyrics for “Bring It On: The Musical.”
