Parents call for more discussion around cancellation of spring sports

Parents of junior high students are sharing their concern that extra curricular activities are going to disappear.

Some schools have been telling students that sports teams like track, softball and badminton, which usually start around this time of year, are not being offered because teachers who coach and organize the events are choosing not to participate.

When a contract was imposed on teachers in February, the Nova Scotia Teacher’s Union said that teachers would not have to take part in extra curricular activities.

Craig Bethune is a parent of a junior high student who’s school has cancelled spring sports this year and said there should be a solution that would allow students to play sports.

“I think the answer of ‘we’re not participating in a sporting event and thats the asnwer and that’s the end of the story,’ it needs more discussion,” he said.

Bethune added that a possible solution is to have parents take over coaching and organizing responsibilities but said parents are worried this may not be temporary and that no sports teams or extra curriculars could be the new normal.

“We need to find a solution so that our kids can experience the kind of things we experienced,” said Bethune while adding that in the end it is the kids who lose out.
