SiRT lays additional charges against former Nova Scotia RCMP officer

By Dan Ahlstrand

A former member of the Nova Scotia RCMP charged with stealing cocaine from an exhibit locker will now face additional charges.

In August 2016, 48-year-old Craig Robert Burnett was charged with trafficking cocaine, breach of trust and laundering proceeds of crime following an investigation by the province’s independent police watchdog, the Serious Incident Response Team.

SiRT Director Ron MacDonald told NEWS 95.7 investigators have decided more charges are warranted.

“During the investigation, some things occurred which caused us to now lay these additional charges,” said MacDonald.

Burnett now faces charges of obstruction of a police officer and fabrication of evidence.

The 25-year veteran of the RCMP is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court on May 8 for his preliminary inquiry.
