Man ends protest on Halifax roof

HALIFAX – A man who climbed on top of the roof of the CTV building Wednesday morning left his protesting perch before supper time as promised, and into the waiting arms of Halifax Regional Police.

Paul Fraser, a protester wearing an orange jump suit, scaled up a ladder just before 8:30 a.m.

“We’re not exactly sure of his motive for climbing up on the building but we don’t recommend it as a practice because he’s putting himself in danger,” Police spokesperson Dianne Woodworth told NEWS 95.7 Wednesday.

Fraser of New Waterford, spoke to NEWS 95.7 from his perch, saying he was doing the protest because he wanted to get a meeting with the federal fisheries minister about a snow crab issue.

The section of roof he was on was an awning about 14 feet above ground.

Police remained on the scene and negotiated with the man throughout the day before Fraser eventually came down from the roof around 4:00 p.m.

Officers arrested him without incident and he was taken into custody, though police anticipated he would released Wednesday evening.

One of the conditions for his release was described by police as “abstaining from going on the rooftop of any building not owned by himself.”

Fraser will appear in court at a later date.
