Regional police warn of courier email scam

HALIFAX — Regional police warning people about an email scam which targeted a local organization in Halifax.
Police were contacted this morning about an incident yesterday after a scammer sent an email to a local organization that appeared to be from a courier company.
The email describes a missed delivery and directs the recipient to click on an attachment to get a shipping label.
Once the attachment is opened, the computer’s files become encrypted and a warning message appears stating that the files would be released if a ransom isn’t paid.
No money was paid in the incident reported today but the computer had to be taken in for servicing.
Police ask anyone who recieves a similar to report it to local police by calling 902-490-5020 and if you have been scammed out of money contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
