Rockingham South street flooded after excavator damages fire hydrant

HALIFAX – Regional Police are looking for suspects after a large excavator damaged a fire hydrant in the Rockingham South-area Sunday night, flooding a nearby street and triggering a number of alarms in the area.

In a release, police said officers were called to Wentworth Drive and Eliza Ritchie Crescent just after 9 p.m. after a report of an excavator being operated by several people, but when officers arrived, it was found empty while resting on a damaged fire hydrant that was releasing water into the street.

Halifax Water crews were able to control the leak, according to police, while Halifax Fire crews responded to a number of alarms in the area because of a lack of water pressure.

No suspects were found in a nearby search but police said they were last seen leaving the area in a small white car.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police, who are asking anyone with information on the incident to get in touch with police or Crime Stoppers.
