Residents concerned about more than proposed asphalt plant emissions: District 13 councillor

HALIFAX – The regional councillor for the St. Margarets Bay area is expecting a big turnout at a public meeting next week on a controversial asphalt plant proposed for the area.

Scotian Materials has asked for a piece of land near Highway 103 to be re-zoned to allow for the plant’s construction, but the application has run into opposition from area residents. The two sessions are designed to allow people both for and against the project to comment.

District 13 Councillor, Matt Whitman, told NEWS 95.7 he has seen new data from the company showing that emissions from the site would fall within acceptable limits.

However, Whitman said emissions are just one of the concerns residents have with the project.

“Lugging raw materials along these bumpy logging roads in the pristine Bowater area above St. Margarets Bay is a huge concern,” he said. “The fact is, this land is not zoned for that.”

According to Whitman, there is a piece of property down the road from the current proposed site–that already has proper zoning–which would be a better fit for the project.

“If you put things where they are meant to go, they will go there a lot easier without outrage from residents,” said Whitman. “Put this project in industrial zoned land that already exists and you won’t have any concerns.”

Two public meetings are scheduled for this month, on January 25th and 26th, at the St. Margarets Centre from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. both nights
