Fire destroys home in Upper Tantallon sub-division

UPPER TANTALLON, N.S. — A home in an Upper Tantallon sub-divison exploded into a ball of flame Thursday afternoon which left Halifax Fire and Emergency crews with a tough task to extinguish.

The fire was at a home on Homewood Grove, in the Westwood Hills area of Tantallon.

Neighbors in the area reported hearing a deafening bang just before 4 p.m. Thursday before hearing sirens.

“Everyone heard a big bang, and the house was completely, gone.  We were standing in the kitchen at home, heard a loud bang and then we smelled smoke,” said neighbor Caroline Parker.

No one from the home was injured, with a Division Commander with Halifax Fire confirming through Municipal Spokesperson, Brendan Elliot that everyone was able to get out of the home safely.

Fire crews took up a defensive position when they arrived, before moving in to eventually douse flames from the outside at three separate locations.

Firefighters tackled flames on the second floor and basement of the home, noting it was too dangerous to go inside.

Around 6 p.m., crews had significantly knocked the fire down, and were left Thursday evening to deal with only hot spots.

Initial reports saying the fire may have started in the garage and as of Thursday evening, there was no word on the official cause.
