Nova Scotia police launch Operation Christmas

HALIFAX – If you’re on the roads this holiday season, you can expect to see a police checkstop as part of Operation Christmas, which begins Wednesday.

The annual campaign will see police agencies across Nova Scotia working together to re-enforce the message that drinking and driving don’t mix. The initiative is designed to not only catch impaired drivers, but also to act as an educational campaign.

Halifax Regional Police are a part of the effort, and Inspector Reid McCoombs told NEWS 95.7 the timing of the campaign is to coincide with the festive season.

“This time of year there is obviously a targeted focus on impaired driving in the holiday season and Christmas party season,” said McCoombs.

McCoombs said there will be checkstops at a number of different locations in the city and at various times of day.

“There will be checkstops in the day time, afternoon, evening, and middle of the night. We will keep them quite random.”

McCoombs said if you’re on the roads Christmas shopping or attending holiday events, chances are you will see a checkstop over the next month.

“We want to keep people from even thinking about drinking and driving, rather than them worrying about being caught,” he added.

Operation Christmas runs until January.
