Businesses on Hammonds Plains Road up in arms over truck by-law

The Hammonds Plains Business Association is meeting tonight to discuss an HRM by-law that’s only recently been enforced.

In the late 90s a by-law was passed to restrict commercial trucks from using Hammonds Plains Rd. as a short-cut to Highway 103.

Local truck driver Reggie Stalard said he never had a problem until a few weeks ago when there was a truck stop advising drivers about the by-law.

“He told me the by-law does not exempt businesses that are on this road,” said Stalard. “Which means we would have to go to Tantallon, cut through Tantallon, get on the 103 and then back on the 102, to Hammonds Plains Road.”

He said there should be an exemption made for local businesses along the road.

The by-law was passed to restrict commercial trucks from using Hammonds Plains Road as a shortcut to Hwy. 103, but as the former MLA for the area Gerry Lawrence said, it was never intended to restrict local business traffic.

“People were very upset that trucks were using the road as a bypass to get to the 103,” said Lawrence. “If I remember, and this was before HRM, we restricted the truck traffic to those trucks but not local businesses.”
