Canadians travelled abroad more in February, StatsCan says

By The Canadian Press

OTTAWA – Statistics Canada says Canadian residents made 5.2 million trips abroad in February, a 3.9 per cent increase from January.

The agency says 4.4 million of those trips were to the United States, a 4.5 per cent increase over January.

The main factor behind the gains was an eight per cent rise in same-day car travel by Canadians to the United States, to 2.6 million trips, the highest monthly level since December 1997.

Overnight travel to the United States fell 0.4 per cent to 1.8 million trips.

Overseas travel by Canadians was up 0.4 per cent to 780,000 trips.

In the opposite direction, travel by residents from abroad to Canada rose 0.6 per cent to 2.1 million trips, with same-day car travel by American residents up 3.0 per cent to 601,000 trips.
