Two charged with impaired driving after women and baby run off highway

Two men face impaired driving charges after police say a vehicle carrying two women and a baby were run off the road on Highway 118 yesterday evening.

Witnesses reported they saw a red SUV speeding inbound near Akerley Boulevard around 5:55 p.m. when it swerved across two lanes and hit a car, which rolled over and ended up in the ditch.

Police say the SUV pulled over briefly, the driver and passenger switched spots, then  hey drove off again.

An officer pulled the vehicle over a short distance later and arrested the pair.

A 23-year-old Truro man has been charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm, impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, failure to remain at the scene of an accident and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

A 25-year-old Millbrook man faces charges of impaired operation of motor vehicle, refusing a breathalyzer, failure to remain at the scene of an accident, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, breach of a court ordered recognizance, breach of probation and driving while disqualified.

Both will be in Dartmouth Provincial Court today.

The 8-month-old passenger in the car that crashed into the ditch was taken to the IWK and has been released.

Two women, 38 and 66, remain in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
