Halifax-Needham residents vote for new MLA in byelection

Voters in the riding of Halifax-Needham head to the polls today for a byelection to fill the vacant seat in the legislature.

It was left empty when long time NDP MLA Maureen MacDonald retired from politics after holding the riding since 1998.

Residents will choose between four candidates, Progressive Conservative Andy Arsenault, the NDP’s Lisa Roberts, Green Party candidate Thomas Trappenberg, and Liberal Rod Wilson.

While voter turnout was slightly up in the advanced poll, byelections generally have a lower turnout than full on general election, according to assistant chief electoral officer Peter Gzowski.

He believes that’s because the number of days offered for advanced polls has been increased from two to seven.

He told NEWS 95.7 those who are eligible can start casting their votes at 8 a.m.

“People can vote at their election day poll, all electors on the list have been sent a voter information card to their address,” he explained.

He added those who don’t know where to vote can find information on the Elections Nova Scotia website, results will also be live streamed there once the polls close at 8 p.m.
