Hischier makes first appearance at Moose training camp

There was lots of excitement on the ice at Cole Harbour Place Monday as Nico Hischier arrived at Halifax Mooseheads training camp.

The forward was the Herd’s pick in this year’s CHL import draft and has drawn comparisons to that of Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid.

Mooseheads’ general manager Cam Russell told NEWS 95.7 play-by-play broadcaster John Moore that Hischier is a complete player.

“He plays a pro game, all three zones of the arena, great defensively, smart with the puck,” he explained.

He said fans will likely see a lot of Hischier on the ice this season, touting his ability to kill penalties and be strong on the power play.

Russell added he doesn’t think it will take long for the Swiss-native to adapt to the North American style of play.

“He’s the first one in the corner, he battles for the puck, I think he’ll do fine on the smaller ice surface.”

Hischier told Moore in an interview on the website sportsandmoore.com, before arriving over the weekend he called former Moosehead Timo Meier, who is also from Switzerland, to get a feel for the city and for the team.

He says he’s is looking forward to his time in Halifax.

The Halifax Mooseheads made three cuts from the roster Monday.

Forwards Gabriel Vanier and Marc-Olivier Gilbert along with defenceman William Smith have been sent home.

Training camp continuines Tuesday with practices starting at 10 a.m., the Green vs Red Intrasquad Game goes from 4 to 6 p.m. at Cole Harbour Place.
