Fire in residential building kills 8 in India

By The Associated Press

NEW DELHI – A fire in a pharmacy engulfed residential quarters of a Mumbai suburban building early Thursday, killing eight people, police said.

A fire official said the victims were asleep when the fire broke out and were trapped on the first floor of the building in Andheri district in India’s financial and entertainment capital.

Mumbai Police spokesman Ashok Dudhe said in addition to the eight deaths, one person was seriously injured.

The Press Trust of India news agency said the fire, which has been put out, started when a cooking gas cylinder was believed to have exploded.

Safety norms are often flouted by builders in India, with a lack of fire extinguishers or inadequate water hydrants for firefighting.
