Canada Post workers in Halifax preparing for possible work stoppage

By Chris Halef

HALIFAX – Canada Post employees may go on strike or get locked out within the next few days if a deal isn’t reached between the Crown Corporation and its workers in the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

Both parties are negotiating over possible cuts to benefits and job security, but haven’t been able to reach an agreement as of yet.

CUPW Nova Local president Tony Rogers tells News 95.7 that both parties are still trying to reach a collective agreement at this time.

“The corporation has said that they may lock us out within the next few days and we have taken strike votes in case the corporation doesn’t want to bargain in good faith. But right now it’s still our expectation that we’re trying to achieve a negotiated settlement,” said Rogers.

According to Rogers, an agreement has been made between the two parties to ensure certain mail will be delivered even if service is disrupted.

“We will deliver any socioeconomic cheques, pension cheques, social service cheques, any government cheques even if we are locked out, we said we would provide that service to the public,” he said.

Employees may be locked out or go on strike as of July 2 if both parties haven’t reached a negotiated settlement by than.
