Bedford man accused of attempted murder refuses to appear in court

A Bedford man facing several charges in Cape Breton, including attempted murder, is scheduled for another court date Wednesday after refusing to appear Monday.

The Cape Breton Post reports Daniel Keays was taken to the Sydney Justice Centre, but wouldn’t leave the sheriff cell area.

He also reportedly declined to meet with his lawyer and duty counsel.

RCMP allege, over the span of about 5-minutes, the 21-year-old intentionally ran into an SUV and two motorcycles.

They say he dragging one motorcycle for about a kilometre before narrowly missing a fourth vehicle and crashing into a guard rail.

According to police, he also assaulted officers and two bystanders.

Police say the victims suffered various injuries but none are considered life-threatening.

He is facing the following charges:

-Attempt to commit murder
-Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm
-Assault causing bodily harm
-Assault of a peace officer causing bodily harm
-Refusal of drug recognition expert demand

Keays’ next court date is scheduled for tomorrow.

The crown says there is concern for his mental health.
