HALIFAX – The Halifax Mixed Martial Arts community is mourning the tragic death of former UFC fighter Ryan Jimmo after he died during a hit and run incident in Edmonton early Sunday morning.

Investigators are still searching for a suspect after Jimmo, 34, was hit following an altercation in a parking lot before the driver fled the scene.

He was pronounced dead in hospital early Sunday.

Jimmo was born in Saint John, New Brunswick and spent some years living and training in Halifax before making his UFC debut in 2012 in Calgary, where he knocked out his opponent in the first seven seconds of the first round.

Peter Martell is the head trainer at Titans MMA in Halifax and used to train Jimmo, telling News 95.7 he was incredibly sad to hear the news of his death, describing the 6′ 2″, 205-pound fighter as “one of the most friendly people he’s ever trained with.”

“He was clown, he was always happy, always smiling and friendly,” Martell said. “I feel terrible for his family for such a tragic loss at such a young age, it has to be so tough on them.”

The president of UFC Dana White tweeted a photo of Jimmo with the caption: “RIP Ryan Jimmo.”

Jimmo was 19-5 in his MMA career and lost his last fight in May of 2015.

Police in Edmonton continue to investigate Jimmo’s death and are still reportedly looking for a dark coloured, older model pickup in connection with the hit and run.
