Bedford man charged with attempted murder after spree of collisions in South Harbour

SOUTH HARBOUR, N.S. – After causing four serious collisions in five minutes in Cape Breton, a Bedford man faces charges of assault and attempted murder.

Police say 21-year-old Daniel Keays began the rampage around 3 p.m. Sunday.

They alleged it started with Keays crashed into an S.U.V. driven by a 49-year-old woman, a 5-year-old boy was a passenger in that vehicle.

They say he drove off, colliding with two motorcycles, each of which had two riders. All were thrown from the bikes.

Keays then dragged one of the bikes for about a kilometre, according to police, until finally coming to a stop when he crashed into a guard-rail.

But it didn’t end there.

RCMP say Keays then assaulted two people who approached to offer him help, and attacked police officers after he was taken into custody.

Keays is facing the following charges:

  • Attempt to commit murder
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm
  • Assault causing bodily harm
  • Assault of a peace officer causing bodily harm
  • Refusal of drug recognition expert demand

According to the RCMP website, that last charge means officers had reason to believe drugs may have been involved and attempted to test Keays’ sobriety.

Keays is scheduled to appear in Sydney Provincial Court on Monday.
