Gender-neutral pricing for haircuts coming to a Halifax spa

HALIFAX – A Halifax spa is going to be charging for haircuts a little differently starting on June 1.

Kara’s Urban Day Spa is introducing gender-neutral pricing, which means what customers pay for a haircut will be determined by hair length, and not gender as has historically been the case.

“Generally, you’re pricing by whether it’s a man or a woman where it should be priced by the time it takes you to do the service and the length of the hair,” said Kevyn Martell, the spa’s Artistic Director.

“We made the change because we felt pricing should be equal and fair for everybody,” he explained.

Martell joined Kara’s six weeks ago and spearheaded the change, and people are buying in.

“The response is crazy,” Martell said. “People are so in tune with it because it’s been such a long time this has been going on.”

According to the spa’s website, prices will now start at $25 for short hair and $35 for long hair.

“Men with longer hair will obviously be paying more, but women with shorter hair will be paying less,” Martell said.

Martell said he believes Kara’s is the first place to introduce this kind of pricing in Atlantic Canada.
