Halifax Fire executive officer comfortable with firefighter staffing

HALIFAX – The executive officer of Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency says he feels very comfortable with the level of firefighter staffing in the municipality despite concerns on social media this past weekend.

Following a structure fire in Cow Bay on Saturday, the Twitter handle @HRMFireNews, which is not formally affiliated with Halifax Fire, tweeted concerns over low staffing levels after firefighters from other stations mobilized to provide coverage.

The tweets were later re-tweeted by the twitter handle @HFXFirefighters, the official twitter account for the Halifax Professional Fire Fighters Association.

Executive officer Phil McNulty says this is a false perspective, and adds it was standard procedure.

“As we move units into fire scenes, we strategically move other units from other areas to back them up, of course utilizing our staff of volunteer firefighters as well. This was just a standard day, no issues at all. I feel very comfortable with the level of service and protection that we had, not only at the scene, but the areas that vacated in order to respond,” said McNulty.

He says Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency is in the process of hiring more firefighters to staff up to a safer level after Halifax City Council directed them to do so in January.
