Nova Scotia government opens 211 to help connect Nova Scotians with Fort McMurray

HALIFAX – The province has set up a hotline to help connect Nova Scotians affected by the Fort McMurray wildfires to government programs that may be able to provide assistance.

Premier Stephen McNeil said on Thursday that Nova Scotians with family in Fort McMurray who need help can phone 211, which will help access services that may be able to assist them.

Nova Scotians in Alberta can also get connected to government assistance programs as well as family in Nova Scotia by calling 1-855-466-4994.

McNeil said with so many Nova Scotians living in the Fort McMurray area, 3,000 according to the 2011 Census, there were some “frightening images,” coming from the area.

McNeil encourages people to donate to the Canadian Red Cross, as he believes the ongoing fight and recovery effort won’t be a quick fix.

“This won’t end in a week, this is a long-term commitment on behalf of the government to continue to work with Nova Scotians who stay in Alberta and those who are coming home,” McNeil told Global News.

The province is also ready to provide firefighting and other resources to Alberta if requested.
