Mooseheads name new head coach

By Mark Hodgins

HALIFAX – The Mooseheads will have a QMJHL veteran behind the bench when the puck drops next season.

Andre Tourigny has been named the team’s new head coach, the team announced Monday, signing a 5 year contract with the Herd.

Tourigny spent 10 seasons as coach of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies where he set a number of franchise records, including most regular season wins with 337. He also spent the last few seasons in the NHL as an assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche and Ottawa Senators.

Tourigny said he’s looking forward to developing some of the young talent coming in to the Organization.

“I’m really excited,” said Tourigny. “When Bobby Smith and Cam Russell talked to me they made me feel really important for the Mooseheads and I’m really excited for the challenge.”

General Manager Cam Russell said talks with Tourigny got underway a couple of weeks ago, and that Andre was his preferred choice to take over the reins.

“Andre’s an established coach in our league,” Russell said. “He’s always been a very hard coach to coach against and play against.”

The Mooseheads will make the announcement official with a press conference in the coming weeks.
