The Latest: Chenault: Panel plans to hear tax credit bill

By The Associated Press

JUNEAU, Alaska – The Latest on legislative happenings as Alaska lawmakers continue to meet in extended session (all times local):

1 p.m.

House Speaker Mike Chenault says a hearing is planned on a rewrite of Gov. Bill Walker’s oil and gas tax credit bill.

Chenault says the House Rules Committee plans to take testimony from the oil and gas industry and the public. He says the hope is to advance a version of the bill from committee late Monday or Tuesday morning and to send it to the floor.

He says the Republican-led majority is trying to get enough support within its caucus with the hope of winning some support from within the minority. He didn’t know if there was sufficient support yet for the bill.

House Rules posted a draft rewrite of the bill earlier this week but hasn’t formally adopted or considered it yet.

Alaska legislators moving from the state capitol due to renovation work are heading to a no frills temporary site nearby.

It’s a former university building, where old classrooms or conference areas will serve as committee rooms and legislators in some cases will share close-quarters office space.

By Monday, virtually everyone will need to be out of the Capitol under the current construction schedule.

An inability for the House to reach agreement on oil and gas tax credit changes by the end of the voter-approved 90-day session limit helped send lawmakers into overtime. They’ve been meeting in extended session since April 18. The constitution allows for regular sessions of up to 121 days, with an option to extend for another 10.

Legislative leaders have chosen to stay in Juneau for now to try to finish their work.
